Abstract

Access to scientific information is essential to produce new knowledge. Access to information currently available on the Internet/World Wide Web, part of which is in Open Access (OA), has been strengthened with the implementation of initiatives that contribute to opening science under the umbrella of Open Science. Alongside these initiatives, illegitimate and illegal ways of accessing scientific publications have emerged, which conflict with the efforts made to consolidate OA, on the one hand, and, on the other hand, can cause serious harm to users. Libraries of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) should pay attention to these issues and seek to sensitize their users to the threats and consequences of using illegal access to information in their institutions. In this sense, through a literature review, it is intended to highlight the contribution of HEI librarians to the importance of ethical and legal access to scientific information.
