Assertion and Marital Adjustment

Abstract

Because it has been speculated that there is a relation between assertiveness and marital adjustment, and because there is scant empirical evidence to support the speculation, two studies were designed to examine the constructs. No relation was found between assertion and marital adjustment for the total group of 187 randomly selected married graduate students. Considered by sex, a positive relation was found between these two factors for males, but not for females. In a second study, 15 students who completed one of two five-week assertion training workshops significantly increased their levels of assertive behavior relative to a control group, but no significant difference was found in marital adjustment between groups. The implications of these two studies are discussed with recommendations.
