Abstract

Garra wanae (Regan, 1914) [N]— Garra Taxonomy. Original description: Discognathus wanae Regan, 1914: 263, fig.A [Wana Toi, tributary of Gomal River, 32°20’N, 69°30’E, southwestern Waziristan, Pakistan; syntypes: BMNH 1913.4.15.65-69 (5)].— Afghanistan synonyms: None.—Revisions: None.—Illustration: Regan (1914: fig. A) as Discognathus wanae. Status in Afghanistan. First record from Afghanistan by Coad (2014: 167); confirmed by Coad (2015: 228).— Afghanistan materials: ZMUC. Distribution and habitat. Distribution in Afghanistan: Kabul River.—General distribution: Baluchistan, Iran to upper Indus basin, Pakistan.—Habitat: This species occurs in streams with stone beds up to 1,800 –2,100 m altitude. It is a benthopelagic species mostly found along the sides of streams where the water is slow and transparent. Freshwater. Economic importance. No commercial importance. Conservation. Conservation status in Afghanistan: Unknown.—IUCN: EN (Daniels & Raghavan 2021).—Threats: CON, CLI, ABS.—Moderate sensitivity to human activities.—Not considered as a keystone species.—Decline status: Unknown.—Moderate priority for conservation action.
