COMMENT: Placed in genus Ursus, subgenus Thalarctos by Gromov and Baranova, 1981:253, and in genus Thalarctos by Corbet, 1978:166. Reviewed by DeMaster and Stirling, 1981, Mamm. Species, 145:1-7. PROTECTED STATUS: CITES - Appendix II as U. (— Thalarctos) maritimus. ISIS NUMBER: 5301412002006003001 as Ursus maritimus.
