Impact de la vaccination sur la pandémie de Covid19 en France pendant l'hiver 2021/2022

Abstract

En janvier 2022, un éminent scientifique a déclaré sur une chaine de télévision française que le vaccin contre la Covid19 était ‘quasiment une escroquerie’. Sur quel fondement repose cette affirmation ? Pour répondre à cette question, j’ai réalisé une évaluation de ce que le vaccin a permis d'éviter au cours de la 5eme vague. Au vu du nombre de cas constatés en France en décembre 2021 et janvier 2022 parmi les personnes non-vaccinées, un calcul simple permet de montrer que sans vaccin, il y aurait eu au minimum 5 à 6 fois plus de décès et d’hospitalisations en soins intensifs. Donc ce vaccin est certes imparfait (il n’a pas empêché la 5eme vague), mais les données montrent qu'il est un outil extrêmement utile dans la lutte contre le virus. La stratégie vaccinale implique des arbitrages complexes : entre bénéfices et risques, entre liberté individuelle et sécurité collective, etc. Cette stratégie mérite donc d’être largement débattue au sein de la société. Les scientifiques ont une responsabilité importante dans ce débat : apporter des informations étayées sur l’état des connaissances (et des incertitudes), quant aux risques et aux bénéfices de la vaccination. L’épisode décrit ici illustre les dérapages déontologiques de certains de nos collègues qui confondent opinions personnelles et avis d’expert, et soulève donc la question de la réaction de la communauté scientifique face à de tels dérapages.
