Di alcune città italiane, di fondazione romana o successiva colonizzazione, sono state fatte in passato delle analisi dell'orientazione della planimetria per individuare possibili relazioni con il sorgere del sole a solstizi o equinozi di decumani e cardini, o con i lunistizi maggiori. Ora si propongono alcune mappe topografiche. Nessuna mappa mostra orientazioni delle vie delle città che siano in contrasto con la scelta migliore legata alla topografia locale.
