Abstract

The paper presents the results of a study of the impacts of the school closures in Austria in Spring 2020 on school students' learning experience, parents' experience of support, self-organisation skills. In addition to surveying school students and teachers, we surveyed 275 parents of students of eight schools in Vienna in three waves, during the school closure, after the partial re-opening, and just before the summer break. As expected, parents of families with lower education and cultural capital, speaking more than one language at home, or single parents reported more stress and less capacities to support their children's home learning. They were also more concerned about their children's learning success. Parents as well as students themselves reported that older youth, above 14, and girls and young women were feeling more stressed and insecure than others - but they received less support from parents. In addition to lower-skilled and income families, parents with high shares of paid employment and in particular mothers working from home also reported lacks of time and capacities to support home learning.
