South African Rural Matriculants' Perceptions of Barriers to Higher Education

Abstract

Une méthode qualitative a été utilisée pour étudier les perceptions des élèves des écoles maternelles rurales sur les obstacles à l'enseignement supérieur (EES). Les données ont été recueillies à partir d'un échantillon ciblé de matriculants du secondaire (N=6) par le biais de discussions de groupe. L'approche de l'enquête narrative a été utilisée pour analyser les données. L'étude a suggéré les obstacles majeurs suivants : manque d'informations sur les options et les opportunités de carrière ; manque d'informations sur le processus de candidature à l'université ; découragement des pairs ; peur des stéréotypes négatifs sur le milieu rural ; manque de parents qui apprécient les avantages de l'enseignement supérieur ; ne pas vouloir quitter son domicile ; manque de soutien financier ; se marier ; responsabilités familiales et manque d'intérêt pour l'enseignement supérieur. L'étude a recommandé les interventions suivantes : la fourniture d'une bourse complète pour améliorer l'abordabilité et l'introduction d'un programme d'orientation et de conseil dans l'école pour sensibiliser les élèves aux options et opportunités de carrière.

Se empleó un método cualitativo para investigar las percepciones de los matriculados rurales sobre las barreras a la Educación Superior (HE). Los datos se recopilaron de una muestra intencional de matriculados de secundaria (N=6) a través de discusiones de grupos focales. Se utilizó el enfoque de investigación narrativa para analizar los datos. El estudio sugirió las siguientes barreras principales: falta de información sobre las opciones y oportunidades profesionales; falta de información sobre el proceso de postulación a las universidades; desánimo entre pares; miedo a los estereotipos negativos del entorno rural; falta de padres que aprecien los beneficios de la educación superior; no querer abandonar el hogar; falta de apoyo financiero; casarse; responsabilidades familiares y falta de interés en la educación superior. El estudio recomendó las siguientes intervenciones: provisión de una beca completa para mejorar la asequibilidad y la introducción de un programa de orientación y asesoramiento en la escuela para aumentar la conciencia de los estudiantes sobre las opciones y oportunidades profesionales.

A qualitative method was employed to investigate rural matriculants' perceptions of the barriers to Higher Education (HE). Data was collected from a purposive sample of High School matriculants (N=6) through focus group discussions. The Narrative Enquiry approach was used to analyze the data. The study suggested the following major barriers: lack of information about career options and opportunities; lack of information about the process of applying to universities; peer discouragement; fear of negative stereotypes of rural background; lack of parents who appreciate the benefits of higher education; not wanting to leave one's home; lack of financial support; getting married; family responsibilities and lack of interest in Higher Education. The study recommended the following interventions: provision of a full scholarship to improve affordability and the introduction of guidance and counseling program in the school to increase students' awareness of career options and opportunities.

تم استخدام طريقة نوعية للتحقيق في تصورات المواد الدراسية الريفية للحواجز التي تحول دون التعليم العالي (HE). تم جمع البيانات من عينة هادفة من مواد الثانوية العامة (العدد=6) من خلال مناقشات مجموعة التركيز. تم استخدام نهج الاستفسار السردي لتحليل البيانات. اقترحت الدراسة العوائق الرئيسية التالية: نقص المعلومات حول الخيارات والفرص الوظيفية ؛ نقص المعلومات حول عملية التقدم إلى الجامعات ؛ تثبيط الأقران ؛ الخوف من الصور النمطية السلبية للخلفية الريفية ؛ نقص الآباء الذين يقدرون فوائد التعليم العالي ؛ عدم الرغبة في مغادرة المنزل ؛ نقص الدعم المالي ؛ الزواج ؛ المسؤوليات الأسرية وعدم الاهتمام بالتعليم العالي. أوصت الدراسة بالتدخلات التالية: توفير منحة دراسية كاملة لتحسين القدرة على تحمل التكاليف وإدخال برنامج التوجيه والإرشاد في المدرسة لزيادة وعي الطلاب بالخيارات والفرص الوظيفية.
