The article deals with the issues of formation of informational competence of students of the pedagogical university. A modern university graduate should be prepared to use theoretical knowledge in practice, working in the education system or in another area of professional activity. It is determined that one of the important directions in the training of a professionally competent specialist is the formation of information competence. The development and implementation of new information technologies in educational practice leads to the updating of the information environment in any subject activity, which requires a radical rethinking of the goals, content, forms and methods of preparing students of the pedagogical university at a new technological level. The article clarifies the essence of the concepts of «competence», «competency», «information competence», the basic structural elements of information competence of students of the pedagogical university are determined. It is noted that the formation of informational competence of the future teacher is an important part of his professionalism. The transformation of education into a high-tech sphere actualizes pedagogical research and development of problems related to the formation of informational competence of future specialists. A special role in the formation of an informatively competent educators is played by education acquired in a higher education institution, focused on practical skills, on the ability to apply knowledge in new pedagogical conditions and situations. Systemic, holistic representation of information competence, revealing its structure, substantiation of criteria, allows purposefully and efficiently organize the educational process within the framework of educational activity. The author reveals the main problems and contradictions in the process of formation of informational competence of students of the pedagogical university based on the study of the process of formation, development and implementation of the competence approach in the education system.
