Navigating Complexity: The Co-Creation Rainbow Framework

Abstract

This poster, which was presented by Danielle M. Agnello at the 17th European Public Health Conference in 2024, introduces the Co-Creation Rainbow Framework, a novel approach to evaluating co-creation methods in public health. Recognizing the limitations of existing models like Arnstein’s Ladder, this framework was developed to assess individual method contributions to ensuring meaningful participation and empowerment in co-creation processes. Through systematic screening and iterative testing, key features from 20 existing models were integrated into a structured framework. The framework contains an Individual-to-Collective Continuum, five sections (Informing, Understanding, Stimulating, Collaborating, and Collective Decision-Making), and three overarching themes (Engage, Participate, Empower). The framework was validated by geographically dispersed co-creation experts and successfully categorized 436 methods, showcasing that it is fit for purpose. The Co-Creation Rainbow Framework facilitates transparent evaluation and reporting of co-creation processes, fostering a shared language for diverse methods and enhancing the reliability and sustainability of co-created public health interventions.
