Clathria (Microciona) Bowerbank 1862

Abstract

Subgenus Clathria (Microciona) Bowerbank, 1862 Clathria (Microciona) species are encrusting sponges with hymedesmioid skeletons consisting of a basal layer of spongin with megascleres embedded heads down and erect on the basal layer. Megascleres typically form ascending plumose tracts.Auxiliary styles form a tangential or paratangential layer at the surface. Microscleres include palmate isochelas and toxas (Hooper 2002 [2004])b. There are 116 accepted species worldwide (de Voogd, et al. 2023) ranging discontinuously in depth from littoral to 710 m.
