Abstract

Marmota (Marmota) monax (Linnaeus 1758) [Mus] monax Linnaeus 1758, Syst. Nat., 10th ed., Vol. 1: 60. Type Locality: "in America septentrionalis." Restricted by Thomas (1911 a:147) to Maryland (USA). Vernacular Names: Woodchuck. Subspecies:: Subspecies Marmota (Marmota) monax subsp. monax Linnaeus 1758 Subspecies Marmota (Marmota) monax subsp. canadensis Erxleben 1777 Subspecies Marmota (Marmota) monax subsp. ignava Bangs 1899 Subspecies Marmota (Marmota) monax subsp. rufescens A. H. Howell 1914 Distribution: Alaska (USA) through S Canada to S Labrador to NE and SC USA; south in Rocky Mtns, possibly to N Idaho. Conservation: IUCN – Lower Risk (lc). Discussion: Subgenus Marmota (Steppan et al., 1999). Reviewed by Kwiecinski (1998, Mammalian Species No. 591).
