Ptychadena oxyrhynchus

Abstract

Ptychadena oxyrhynchus (Smith, 1849) Sharp-nosed Grass Frog Material: Two females, NGK-Nimba 0040, NGK-Nimba 0041, and one male, NGK-Nimba 0042 (Fig. 13 F). Comments: Ptychadena oxyrhynchus is a large frog with extremely robust and long hind legs. It occurs in savannahs and edges of the forest zone across sub-Saharan Africa (Rödel 2000; Channing and Rödel 2019). During the rainy season, the species was found in the Yéalé village (07°31.928’N, 008°25.401’W; 425 m asl), along dirt roads with temporary water bodies of different sizes. The species survives the dry season in humid parts of rice paddies. In this season, rice is harvested and we saw the frogs in vast numbers. The sizes of two females were 59.0 and 64.8 mm, while a male measured 52.0 mm.
