SPOC QUERO – Editorial Quality Search Engine Optimisation and Tools

Abstract

The poster will present the content of the SPOC QUERO (for Editorial Quality Search Engine Optimisation and Tools). The SPOC was born out of an initiative by Toulouse Jean-Jaurès University (France) in 2018. It aims to professionalise scientific journal editors by providing them with an innovative, open and certified training programme in editorial quality. Since its launch, it has trained 200 people. The SPOC is being developed within the framework of the Repères network of French scientific journal incubators in collaboration with the Médici French network of publishing professionals and the Mir@bel network for reporting and access to French-language HSS journals. The three partners are helping to update the content and run the training programme. The training seeks to develop professional practices and promote the acquisition of skills by reaching specific audiences: university presses, journal editors and editorial teams (all disciplines), and information support professionals at national and international levels in the French-speaking world. Designed to lead to accreditation, it is intended to promote the independence and technical sustainability of journals and help consolidate university presses. The SPOC offers a learning path devoted to good practices in journal publishing through seven modules alternating learning methods (videos, texts, flashcards, etc) and punctuated by tests and evaluation: 1. vocabulary and players in the open public scientific publishing environment, 2. legal framework for creating and distributing a scientific journal, 3. editorial monitoring of a journal, 4. international editorial quality standards (DOAJ and Latindex), 5. structuring metadata and contents, 6. structured publishing tools, 7. referencing and visibility via various information systems. A new module on the links between publication and data is currently under construction. Two training sessions are organised each year. Learners can follow the course on their own for 6 weeks, lasting around 10 hours. Hosted on a public platform, the SPOC is distributed under a CC BY-NC licence. It can be fully reused by other institutions and has been adapted for local uses. A project of the Repères network plans to translate the educational content into English to open up the training to a wider audience and enable the internationalisation of the training in connection with OPERAS and the DIAMAS project.
