Abstract

Every day, there are many men and women who rise with the determination to educate in border territories. Where there are children, youth, and adults who, in adverse conditions, dream of learning, growing, and achieving a better future. These borders are not only geopolitical. This article gives voice to educators who work in hospitals, prisons, youth shelters, indigenous communities, or cities divided by a wall. They share their vision of what education is and how it is essential in those spaces between pain and no, freedom and imprisonment, past and future... What is their day-to-day like? What skills must an educator possess in those spaces? What makes their students different from those attending a school in most of our neighborhoods? How do borders, walls, or limitations affect students and educators? Estela Solis, Director of Communication Studies (Faculty of Humanities, Mexicali, Mexico); Ana Belén Cintas, Head of Casa Abierta and the Leisure Time and Family area of COANIQUEM (Corporation for Assistance to Burned Children, Santiago de Chile, Chile); Irene Monferrer, volunteer educator and companion in the Brians 2 correctional facilities and the Women's Prison (Barcelona, Spain); Toni Vila, educator at CAHOVA (Home for Boys, Mexicali, Mexico), and Benito Huerta, educator, Escalapian, and member of the Ngiwa people (Puebla, Mexico) share their experiences and acknowledge that presence and support, respect, and the desire for transformation are key in their task. Vocational calling and passion permeate their lives: they all seem to embrace Freire's idea that the educator educates and is educated through dialogue. Keywords: education right; border territories; accompany; transform; justice.
