Summary The frequencies of 10 HLA-A and 14 HLA-B antigens were determined in thirty patients with alopecia areata. Distribution of HLA antigens was studied according to patient's response to a single immunizing dose of 2 mg of 1-chloro-2: 4-dinitrobenzene (DNCB). HLA-A3 was associated with defective immune response. Segregation of patients with alopecia areata into ‘high-responders’ and ‘low-responders’ to DNCB suggests that acquired disturbances of the immune-response may be modulated by genes linked to the major histocompatibility complex.
