This Topical issue collects some recent developments and specific applications of combined and multi-scale modelling in the field of intense electronic excitation of matter. It is one of the outcomes of COST Action TUMIEE (CA17126). In this introductory paper, we set the stage by discussing the paradigm of hybrid models and the motivation of development of such combined approaches.
