Abstract

ABSTRACT: From 03 to 13 December 2014 the mangrove crab Ucides occidentalis (Ortmann, 1897) was surveyed in the mangrove ecosystem of Tumbes, to determine the average density, distribution, concentration and biological aspects of the resource and its relationship with the environmental parameters. The average density was 3.2 ind.m-2. In Corrales (south) the highest average density was recorded (3.7 ind.m-2) and in Puerto Pizarro (center) the lowest (2.7 ind.m-2). The sex ratio favored males (2.2 M: 1 F). The sizes varied between 35.4 and 102.7 mm of cephalothorax width (CW), with average for females of 69.1 mm, for males of 78 mm and 75.2 mm for both sexes. Commercial sizes (≥65 mm CW) accounted for 82.4% in females and 95.1% in males. The analysis of stages of gonadal maturity, indicated predominance of maturing females and males, less in Zarumilla (north) that presented mature females. The proportion of active burrows (78.3%) was higher than inactive ones (covered: 21.6%). 74% of males presented allometric chela. In Zarumilla the highest average temperature (28.5 °C) was recorded. In Puerto Pizarro, lower averages of temperature (27.5 °C), dissolved oxygen (DO) (2.42 mL.L-1) and higher averages of pH (7.76) and salinity (40.3‰) were recorded. Corrales presented the lowest averages of pH (7.59), salinity (22.97‰), the maximum DO concentration (3.37 mL.L-1) and also the mean pH of the sediment was slightly more acid than in the two previous locations. Population densities were not statistically associated with the physical-chemical parameters of the water, but showed an inverse association with the mean pH of the sediment only in Puerto Pizarro.
