Abstract

Introdução: Os problemas do comportamento alimentar, a imagem corporal e determinadas características da personalidade, como o auto-criticismo surgem, frequentemente, associados ao exercício físico compulsivo. Objetivo: (1) Comparar os problemas alimentares, a imagem corporal, as características da personalidade e o auto-criticismo entre três grupos de participantes: grupo que não pratica exercício físico; grupo que pratica exercício físico abaixo ou de acordo com o recomendado pela Organização Mundial da Saúde (OMS); grupo que excede o recomendado pela OMS para o exercício físico. (2) Avaliar os preditores para o envolvimento em exercício compulsivo. Método: Foram avaliados 299 participantes, entre os 18 e 35 anos, através de instrumentos de autorrelato. Resultados: A frequência do exercício físico compulsivo foi de 6.7%. Os participantes que excedem as recomendações da OMS para a frequência de exercício físico tendem a apresentar maior evitamento e mais comportamentos guiados por regras, comparativamente aos participantes que praticam exercício físico abaixo ou de acordo com o recomendado pela OMS. A preocupação alimentar e conforto em ser tocado por outros apresentaram-se como preditores do exercício compulsivo. Discussão: Os resultados deste estudo enfatizam que a prática excessiva de exercício físico poderá estar relacionada com uma pobre gestão emocional quando o mesmo não é possível.
