Abstract

The realization of the uninterrupted flow of time and the consequent awareness of the ephemerality of life and the inevitable certainty of death are topics that remain constant in the literary tradition throughout the centuries. In the specific case of the Mannerist poets - from Camões and Diogo Bernardes to the less canonical Soropita and Rodrigues de Lobo, for example - in baroque lyric, strongly influenced by the program of recatholization as a result of the Counter-Reformation, they will assume a central place, the theme of death being associated with two contradictory but complementary attitudes: the adoption of a vigilant and penitential conduct or the option for existential Portuguese literature, the mannerist and baroque periods (16th-17" centuries) are particularly fertile in the treatment of these themes. If it is true that the reflections about the fugacity of life and the disillusionment of the world abound in the compositions of hedonism. This essay examines the importance given by baroque poets to the theme of death, in its multiple facets and implications, following the tradition of the poets of the period immediately preceding and in close connection with the historical context that serves as a framework for such lyric production.
