This article reads South African science-fiction writer Lauren Beukes’s first novel, Moxyland (2008) set in a futuristic Cape Town, from the perspective of Lindsay Bremner’s notion of “citiness”-- or how cities produce the modernity of the subjects who inhabit them. The novel is remarkable for its dependence on the social geography of the South African city. This article charts Beukes’s resolutely mobile focalizers as they negotiate the spatial itineraries and technologies of governance in which they are embedded. It explores how Beukes’s futuristic urban setting fuses punitive forms of digital technology with the biopolitical regulation of social relations in an unsettling reprise of the apartheid groundplan. My reading positions Moxyand in relation to discussions of African city textualities--a critical rubric introduced by Ranka Primorac in this journal--the better to explore how the novel makes history of dystopia.

The recognition of the autocephaly of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) by the Ecumenical Patriarchate in 2019 sparked a debate in the Orthodox world about the legitimacy of such an act. In the present study, we aim to explain, through the concept of theopolitics, this event which has caused a schism in the contemporary Orthodox Church. Following a brief introduction to Buber’s concept of theopolitics, we focus on a historical overview, demonstrating that the problems of the Orthodox world do not originate in theological issues, as it might seem at first glance, but primarily in political issues. The case of the autocephaly of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church proves the importance of theopolitics.

Abstract Hilazon Tachtit Cave served as a cemetery for at least 28 individuals and an arena for interment rituals and other activities. The nature of the activities in the cave, their frequency and their recurrence over time, demonstrate that this site was an important sacred place on the Late Natufian (ca. 12,000 cal. BP) landscape of the western Galilee of Israel. Using a GIS-based approach, we examine the distribution and density of small flint chips and other microartifacts within the site to ascertain the location, timing and intensity of activities. From this, we reconstruct the depositional history and the order of burial and ritual events in the cave. We then explore the role of collective memory in the formation and continued use of the cave as a unique cemetery. Our results show that the memory of the initial burial event shaped the future use of the cave, its importance as a site for human burial and ritual performance, and its place as a sacred locale for the Late Natufian community.

AbstractHip-hop music has become an important tool worldwide for poor, marginalized youth to reflect on their lived experiences. This article traces the genre's production from its spontaneous origins in the urban ghettos of New York to its commoditization for global consumption and its evolution in three different Latin American settings: Colombia, Cuba, and Mexico. The article explores how hip-hop has been appropriated in each country and has been used to express the performers’ reflections on social, political, and economic problems. It also looks at the interplay between the homogenizing tendencies of global hip-hop and its local reception.

It is my understanding that teaching material will best reach its targeted audience (viz. learners in the field of bioethics) if the topic is clearly defined and well structured. Case studies are standard procedures aiming at this goal. Thandis case study is a good example of the complexity of life and of ethical behaviour. Teaching case studies however should disentangle the intertwined moral problems rather than complexify them. I have listed in Thandis case-study the following ten ethical issues (in order of frequency): duty/obligation informed consent privacy competence conscience (awareness of a moral obligation or conflict) confidentiality beneficence moral conflict (conscientious objection) legal obligation versus moral duty and right conduct (professional and moral). Even if one may agree that some do overlap it is still a mouthful. Each topic independently would deserve a full chapter or article not to say a book to be addressed adequately. It might discourage the reader/learner to have to grapple with the entire gamut of bioethics in one single case study. If Thandis case study is intended as a teaching tool it would suggest restricting the number of ethical dilemmas in one single presentation. (excerpt)
