Prematuridade e maus tratos à criança

Abstract

Despite the knowledge that prematurity is an important risk factor in child development, little is known about the mechanisms through which this occurs. In order to estimate the impact of prematurity in the circumstances of the probability of a child being maltreated by his/her parents, 82 mothers and 80 fathers were studied in the following dimensions: perceptions and expectations towards the baby (before and after birth), history of abuse, abuse potential, parent stress and emotional attachment with flue baby. Results prove that there is a higher risk for a premature baby to be maltreated by his/her parents, and furthermore, point out the mechanisms through which this circumstance may occur.
