A cognição social é um constructo alargado que incorpora várias habilidades, tais como a perceção de emoções, perceção social e teoria da mente, estando o seu comprometimento relacionado com a perturbação esquizofrénica. A Teoria da Mente (ToM) é a habilidade mais danificada nesta doença psiquiátrica. Esta teoria envolve a capacidade de compreender estados mentais dos outros, como diferentes dos nossos e a capacidade de executar inferências corretas sobre o conteúdo desses estados mentais. No presente estudo, uma amostra de 29 esquizofrénicos inimputáveis, foi testada ao nível do comprometimento da ToM em relação a variáveis sociodemográficas e variáveis de contexto de internamento prisional. A operacionalização da ToM foi testada a partir de uma tarefa de falsa crença de primeira ordem (Sally-Ann Test), e um teste de reconhecimento do faux pas social. Resultados revelam que indivíduos esquizofrénicos têm maior taxa de sucesso em tarefas de falsa crença de primeira ordem. Variáveis que definem medidas de suporte social, reportaram maior influência sobre os resultados obtidos na tarefa de reconhecimento do faux pas. No geral, os resultados revelam que a execução em tarefas da ToM está intrinsecamente relacionada com os défices cognitivos relativos à esquizofrenia.
