Abstract Among Italian contemporary authors that have written children and young people’s Literature, Dino Buzzati is one of the most outstanding writers, even though he was very multifaceted and also cultivated other genres. Our analysis will focus on the study of the translation process of cultural references that can be found in the book La famosa invasione degli orsi in Sicilia and its translations into Spanish. It is well known that the main characteristics of children and young people’s Literature are textual (language and style) and paratextual (text and image), as well as those that arise from asymmetric communication between adults (authors and editors) and children/young people (readers). All these special features will be included in the study. The classification of cultural references that has been applied is mainly focused on the reader’s abilities and needs and thus Van Coillie’s model has been chosen. Regarding translation techniques, we have opted for the categories proposed by Franco Aixelá. Resumen Dentro de los autores italianos contemporáneos que se han dedicado a la Literatura infantil y juvenil, Dino Buzzati es uno de los exponentes más destacados, si bien es un escritor muy polifacético que cultivará también otros géneros. Nuestro análisis se centra en el estudio del proceso traductor que sufren las referencias culturales presentes en la obra La famosa invasione degli orsi in Sicilia y sus traducciones al español. Como es conocido, las características fundamentales de la LIJ son las textuales (lenguaje y estilo) y las paratextuales (textos e imágenes) así como aquellas que surgen de la comunicación asimétrica que existe entre el adulto (autor o editor) y el niño/joven (lector). Todas estas peculiaridades estarán presentes en este estudio. La clasificación de las referencias culturales que hemos aplicado se centra principalmente en las habilidades y necesidades del destinatario, por ello hemos elegido el modelo de Van Coillie; con respecto a las técnicas de traducción, nos hemos decantado por las categorías propuestas por Franco Aixelá.
