Abstract

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of race, lightening, darkening, crowding and dental diastema on facial attractiveness. A descriptive, analytical and cross-sectional study was carried out, where the photos of 4 models matched by sex and race were rated in an online survey, which also asked for data on the personal preferences of the participants and carried out the PIDAQ form to assess self-satisfaction with the aesthetics of their smiles. A total of 315 participants were obtained, of whom 7 were excluded for not completing all the data on the form, with an estimated loss of 2.22%. It was found that the photographs with the whitening modification were the most selected for their attractiveness in almost all the models, while in the assigned social characteristics an important variation was observed, with no apparent relation to the modifications in the smile. It was concluded that regardless of the sociodemographic factors and the personal preferences of the participants, brightening the teeth increases the attractiveness of the smile. Also, that the level of schooling seems to have an effect on the differential way in which the smiles of men and women are judged and that the sociodemographic factors evaluated and the personal preferences of the patients do not seem to have an effect on the assigned personality traits to the different types of smiles.
