Abstract

The experiments were carried out under greenhouse conditions, in the Faculdade de Ciências Agrárias e Veterinárias - Universidade Estadual Paulista at Jaboticabal, SP, 21o 16' 22'' S, 48o 18' 58'' W and altitude of 595 m, to evaluate the performance of cultivars of net melon, Bonus no. 2, Don Carlos and Hy Mark, cultivated in soil and in substrate, in summer and winter, related to vegetative growth, yield and fruit quality. The soil cultivation was driven on plant beds with located irrigation. The sand cultivation used black polyethylene bags and a circulating solution fertigation system. The commercial substrate cultivation used a composed pinus bark, vermiculite, perlite and peat mixture conditioned in slabs, and a fertigation system with non circulating solution. The summer experiment was carried out from November, 1999 to April, 2000, and the winter experiment from July to November, 2000. The experiment was designed in randomized blocks with five replications and a split-plot scheme, with main treatments in a 3 X 3 factorial scheme with a cultivation systems and cultivars factors. As a secondary treatment, the summer and winter plantations. The Bonus no. 2 cultivar presented a larger vegetative performance, a later production, larger commercial fruits production. The fruits were spherical, with the smallest locular cavity, size and with the highest total soluble solids contents. The Hy Mark cultivar presented the most precocious production, the lowest index of fruits per plant and elongated form. Don Carlos cultivar produced elongated fruits, with the largest locular cavity and the lowest total soluble solids contents. The cultivation in the sand developed plants with the largest vegetative growth, the largest leaf area and dry matter of the shoots; the commercial substrate cultivation plants presented the lowest vegetative performance... A cv. A cv.
