O objetivo deste trabalho é comparar a construção dos sentidos atribuídos por críticos e leitores comuns ao livro Ensaio sobre a Cegueira, de José Saramago, sob a perspectiva da Lingüística Cognitiva associada ao contexto, em algumas de suas manifestações, com a fundamentação teórica proporcionada por Gilles Fauconnier (1997, 2002), Mark Turner (1987, 1996), Koch (2002(a) e 2002(b), 2001) e Marcuschi (2007 (a), 2007(b)). Inicialmente, é discutida a teoria de que um texto não possui um sentido imanente, mas que ele é construído na mente de seu enunciatário a partir de indicadores. Em seguida, fazemos uma análise dos sentidos atribuídos por três críticos literários brasileiros para, depois, compará-los com os sentidos propostos por leitores comuns, com escolaridade universitária. Para ter um controle maior sobre esse processo, tomamos por base os sentidos atribuídos às imagens fundamentais do texto, a partir das idéias de projeção propostas desde Lakoff & Johnson (1980), envolvendo, quando pertinente, a teoria dos esquemas de imagem também inicialmente proposta por Lakoff (1987) e a categorização.

The aim of this work is to compare the construction of meanings assigned by critics and common readers to the book Ensaio sobre a Cegueira written by Jose Saramago, under the perspective of Cognitive Linguistics associated to the context, in some of its manifestations, with the theoretical base provided by Gilles Fauconnier (1997, 2002), Mark Turner (1987, 1996), Koch (2002(a) e 2002(b), 2001) and Marcuschi (2007 (a), 2007(b)). At the beginning, the theory about a text not having an inherent meaning, but being built in the mind of the one who utters it from its indicators is discussed. Following, we analyze the meaning assigned to three Brazilian literary critics, after comparing them with the meanings proposed by common readers who have university level. In order to have larger control over this process, we considered the meanings assigned to fundamental images of the text, from the ideas projection proposals from Lakoff & Johnson (1980) as a base, evolving, when necessary, the image schemes theory which was also initially proposed by Lakoff (1987) and categorization.
