Abstract

The continuous phenomenon of global warming will certainly be followed by an increase of droughts and unstable weather conditions. Prior information of genotype maize root systems and their possible relation with the shoot would be of great interest in a corn breeding program. Thus, this study aimed to identify the existence of possible effects of previous selection of maize inbred for length, area and volume of the root system and select superior hybrids for the regions of São Paulo and Goiás states, through the estimation of their general and specific combining abilities (CGC and CEC). To evaluate the maize inbreeds as superior and inferior for length, area and volume of the root system, an experiment in nutrient solution was carried out in 2009 in Jaboticabal-SP, Brazil. In the agricultural year 2009/2010, the selected lines were crossed in complete and partial diallel schemes. The diallel hybrids, with enough seeds for agronomic trait evaluations in three environments, Barretos-SP, Monte Azul Paulista-SP and Santa Helena de Goiás-GO, Brazil, and three commercial checks (2B707, DKB390 and AG7000) were evaluated during the crop year of 2010/2011, in a randomized block design, with three replications. The following variables were evaluated: percentage of lodged and broken plants, plant height, ear height and grain yield. On average for the three environments, the inferior group of hybrids for root system excelled in productivity in relation to the superior and superior x inferior groups. However, the hybrid combinations S10 x S13, S5 x I1 and S2 x S14 that best stood out, by high values of CEC and CGC for it´s genitors, have all three, at least one genitor belonging to the group of superior inbred lines
