Amerikan üniversitelerinde tamamlanmış tefsir tezleri

Abstract

This thesis aims to contribute to the study of tafsir in Turkey in terms of literature by summarizing and evaluating English doctoral and master's theses related to the field of tafsir completed at various universities in America. We have addressed one hundred nine theses completed between the years of 1925 and 2016. These theses have been completed under the mentorship of academicians working in different departments as – unlike Turkish universities – there are no `Tafsir` departments in American universities. In this study we have classified and individually examined these theses in chronological order under the following headings: i) History of the Qur'an, ii) Quranic sciences, iii) Qur'anic interpretation, iv) Tafsir literature written throughout history, and v) `Thematic Exegesis.`The authors of the aforementioned theses have generally argued that methods of exegesis developed in the West can also be applied to Qur'anic exegesis and have more often than not used various interpretation methods based on literary theories. Some authors employed semitic rhetorical methods which were first used in the eighteenth century in Biblical studies but later developed adaptive rules and methods for many semitic languages including Arabic. Despite the fact that America is a country in which the dissemination of false information about Islam especially through the media is prevalent and Islam is a minority religion, it has been determined that the majority of the theses examined in this study have been objectively written based on scientific research. However, academic principles have been compromised in some of these theses, wherein the deliberate distortion of the topics they deal with have been observed. These theses prove the continued need for research in the field of tafsir – such research that is based not on subjective ideas and prejudices, but on scientific principles employed with a sincere intention of establishing a bridge between the Islamic world and its own.
