Abbâsîler döneminde ilmî hayatta Süryânîler (132-656/750-1258)

Abstract

Researches on the Syriac people in Turkey have been increased in recent years. The Syriacs, whose population in Syria-Mesopotamia region today are rather decreased, were the dominant element for a long time in the region. The Syriacs took a very active role in the scientific circles of the Abbasids period and put forth works that left a mark in the fields of medicine and translation. Although a significant number of studies have been done on the history of science and the translation movement in our country up to now, the studies on the subject specific to the Syriacs are limited. In this research the Syriac scholars who lived in the period of Abbasids and their scientific studies are introduced. The subject is examined using data from classical sources and findings from recent researches. Considering the scientific contributions of the caliphs, and the activities of the Syriac scholars, the Abbasid period was divided into three terms. Each term is studied separately in the research and the political, social and scientific developments are examined all together. It is seen that in the first term the Syriac scholars started to enter the Muslim scientific circles, in the second one they had a substantial influence in the strict sense and in the third they gradually lost this influence. Moreover, taking into account the limited literature and knowledge on the Syriac people in general manner in Turkey, the Syriacs were presented with their history, dating back to B.C. in the introduction. Keywords : Abbasids, Syriac People, Scholars,Translators, Biography
