Abstract

The theory of internal senses is one of the most significant problematic areas in the history of philosophy in terms of its dimensions related to the fields such as epistemology, psychology and ethics. In this context, generally the role of internal senses and particularly imagination/cogitation and estimation increases and decreases in terms of soul-body and sense-intellect distinctions. Avicenna, who is one of the most significant philosophers in the history of philosopy, plays a vital role with his contributions to the theory of internal senses. He takes into account imagination/cogitation and estimation as an intermediary powers to overcome the great distinctions between soul-body, sense-intellect and to establish relationshipsbetween these areas. These powers play highly critical role both in abstraction process which occurs from senses to the intellect and emanation process which occurs from intellect to the senses in the realization and explanation of cognition and movements of human beings. However the reflection of increasing and decreasing impact of internal senses in the history of philosophy can be taken into consideration in the variability of Avicenna's emphases on the internal senses. While the role of imagination/cogitation and estimation is mainly positive at the beginning of abstraction process , the role of imagination/cogitation and estimation turns into the negative tone at the end of it as physical and sensual powers. This study claims to make clear the functions of imagionation/cogitation and estimation powers as physical and sensual in the stages of cogitation and movement and the life after the death of human being which is composed of soul and body from the very beginning to the next life.
