Moluscos de Cerro Colorado: cambios faunísticos e importancia ecológica y paleoambiental

Abstract

In this work basic information is compiled on the mollusks found in the Cerro Colorado Cultural Natural Reserve (Córdoba Province, Argentina), since they are of significant ecological and palaeoenvironmental value. Thirteen specific taxa were registered, distributed between eight families: seven gastropod families (Cochliopidae, Planorbidae, Succineidae, Strophocheilidae, Bulimulidae, Odontostomidae and Xanthonychidae) and one bivalve family (Cyrenidae). The best-represented native species belong to the genera Bulimulus, Plagiodontes, Clessinia and Epiphragmophora. Plagiodontes predominates the late Holocene fossils, while Bulimulus is scarce. In older outcrops from the middle Holocene, Megalobulimus lorentzianus appears, for which two new 14C dates were obtained that gave calibrated ages between circa 7000 and 6500 years BP. This is particularly relevant given that this species is absent in more recent sediments and in the present. These results are discussed, and the potential of mollusks as Holocene climate and environmental proxies is highlighted.
