Abstract

ABSTRACT: The general objective of this thesis is to develop a methodology for the classification of intertidal rocky shores at three different scales: European (NE Atlantic), regional (N and NW Iberian Peninsula) and local (Cantabria). The methodology is based on the analysis of the abiotic characteristics that determine the macroalgae species distribution, taking into account the specific requirements of the different spatial levels. Physical data obtained by specific procedures (e.g., satellite data and numerical modelling) and examined by statistical analyses is applied to obtain groups with ecological significance characterised by different communities and species distribution. Additionally, the relation between geomorphological variables and rocky intertidal macroalgae species was analyzed at local scale. The feasibility of this methodological approach as a useful tool for the assessment of coastal systems at the three scales was tested.
