Abstract

ABSTRACT: Fuente del Salín is a Gravettian archaeological site with evidence of human occupation during a short period of time. There are not many Cantabrian archaeological sites with Gravettian evidences and some are currently debated regarding their cultural attribution. This coupled with the scarcity of published dates, subsistence studies and paleoenvironmental data, increases the uncertainty and limits the correlations between various human occupations ascribed to this period and, therefore, to the definition of a Gravettian temporal, paleoeconomic and paleoenvironmental sequence. Thus, this work presents the study of macrofauna from level 2 of Fuente del Salín, ascribed to this Gravettian horizon and aims to solve the paradigm between specialization or alimentary diversification for the first dawn of the Upper Paleolithic. It is also an attempt to join the site into the Gravettian techno-complex and analyze its subsistence strategies. Preliminary studies performed to date on this site hindered its definitive ascription to this cultural horizon. All along, it delves into the relationship between food resource exploitation and their subsistence strategies with the graphical activity at Fuente del Salín.
