Abstract

This PhD dissertation aims to study politeness in Catalan Sign Language (LSC), specifically through the discourse strategy that consists of expressions for restricting opinions. We created an ad hoc corpus from a TV Show in LSC, which features real and spontaneous productions of Deaf signers. Moreover, since politeness and mitigation are intercultural phenomena, we interviewed Deaf signers from de Deaf community in Catalonia to avoid a biased interpretation of the data set. The analysis is qualitative and quantitative. We considered social factors involved in the communicative situation (macro level), the specificities of the discourse genre (meso level), and the linguistic expressions, both manual and non-manual (micro level). The results are the first description of attenuation in LSC from a sociopragmatics perspective.
