El estudio del comportamiento animal en España: una larga historia poco conocida

Abstract

En los últimos años se ha producido en España un considerable incremento en el interés por el conocimiento del comportamiento animal. Al menos así parece indicarlo el elevado grado de institucionalización que comienza a alcanzar su estudio en nuestro país. Este proceso ha supuesto la creación de sociedades científicas, la incorporación de asignaturas y programas de doctorado sobre comportamiento animal en las universidades españolas, la aparici6n de nuevos grupos de investigación y la proliferación de canales de comunicación científica. En contra de lo que los propios etólogos españoles suelen creer, este interés por el comportamiento animal no es nuevo en nuestro país. Por el contrario, existe una larga tradición todavía poco conocida que se remonta, al menos, hasta las primeras manifestaciones de la ciencia moderna durante los siglos XVI y XVII. Dentro de nuestro interés por recuperar la historia del estudio del comportamiento animal en España, en el presente artículo ofrecemos un resumen de las principales aportaciones realizadas por los autores españoles a este apasionante campo científico. La información ha sido agrupada en los cuatro periodos siguientes: desde el Renacimiento hasta la ilustración (siglos XVI a XVIII), desde la Restauración hasta la Guerra Civil (siglo XIX y primer tercio del siglo XX), desde 1940 hasta 1970 y, por ultimo, desde 1970 hasta nuestros días.
