Abstract

Entre 1579 y 1581 se representaron en Sevilla cuatro tragedias del poeta Juan de la Cueva, junto a sus diez comedias. El hombre de letras, recurriendo a temas clásicos, a antiguas leyendas medievales españolas y a la pura fantasía, se esforzó en llevar al público más amplio la cultura en la que se había formado. Fue el primero en introducir las innovaciones estructurales de la tragedia senequista y de los modelos italianos, siempre cercano al público, al que quiso entretener y educar según el lema horaciano. Se publican aquí, por primera vez en un único volumen, sus tragedias en edición crítica, precedidas por el estudio póstumo de uno de sus lectores más atentos, Rinaldo Froldi. Este libro, gracias también al cariñoso prólogo de Joan Oleza, quiere recordar al maestro por su gran aportación a los estudios del teatro clásico español.
