Naturalismo y absurdo

Abstract

Se trata de discutir algunas de las razones que podamos tener para afirmar: 'Si la visión naturalista del mundo es en general correcta, entonces la vida humana es necesariamente absurda'. Si este condicional me interesa, es porque no puedo dejar de conceder su antecedente, es decir, no puedo dejar de percibir el mundo a través de ciertos supuestos naturalistas. Se sigue, pues, que si la tesis T resultase verdadera, me vería obligado a aceptar una conclusión que desearía evitar, pues en algún grado me inquieta. Parece, por tanto, sensato empezar examinando el tipo de razones que puedan invitarnos a suscribir ese condicional. En un segundo apartado, intentaré mostrar, sin embargo, que tales consideraciones descansan en supuestos inadecuados y que, en absoluto, se siguen del compromiso naturalista que estoy dispuesto a asumir. Insistiré, así, en que los argumentos que conducen a ese condicional presuponen una lectura de lo valioso difícilmente sostenible; y sugeriré un tratamiento alternativo en el que nos resultará fácil reconocer por qué la visión naturalista del mundo altera las condiciones en las que la vida humana puede tener sentido, pero no la condena necesariamente al absurdo.
