The discussion about the intentionality of mental states occupies center stage in the analytically-oriented philosophy of mind. The rise of externalist theories of meaning and, in particular, of so-called ¿direct reference¿ theories, has renewed the debate about the nature of intentionality. These semantic theories have put in question important assumptions of the traditional conception, which tends to rest on a Frege-inspired semantics. In this paper we intend to offer a characterization of these two approaches to intentionality and of their respective problems, as well as to present the bases of an alternative proposal, which might be eventually able to avoid those problems.
