Donald Davidson: el monismo anómalo

Authors: Moya Espí, Carlos;

Donald Davidson: el monismo anómalo

Abstract

After presenting, in the first part of this paper, the basic tenets of such theories about the nature of mind as Descartes-inspired dualism, logical behaviorism, the identity theory of mental and physical properties, and functionalism, as well as the most important difficulties of each of these approaches, I deal, in the second part, with some central aspects of Davidson¿s anomalous monism, which was conceived by him as an alternative to the aforementioned proposals. Finally, in the third part, I discuss the most notable problems of this Davidsonian theory. One of them, as different authors have pointed out, is a flawed approach to psychophysical interaction, owing to an unintended tendency towards epiphenomenalism about mental properties; another problem is a diffuse individuation of particular mental states and their identity, which undermines the monist aspect of the theory.
