El platonismo de Frege

Abstract

Cuando desde una perspectiva filosófico-matemática se reflexiona sobre la aritmética suele surgir casi de inmediato una pregunta clave: ¿existen los números? l.as respuestas pueden ser diversas. Dos son relevantes para la problemática que vamos a abordar en este trabajo: a) Los números existen, pero son objetivos antes que subjetivos. Ésta es la concepción platónica defendida por Frege. En general, el platonismo es una doctrina sobre la existencia de entidades abstractas, cuyas propiedades y relaciones son estudiadas por la matemática. b) Los números existen y son construcciones mentales subjetivas de los individuos. Esta concepción fue criticada por Frege y, posteriormente, defendida por Brouwer. En una ponencia leída en el II Congrés de Filosofía al País Valencià, sometimos a examen la filosofía de la matemática intuicionista de Brouwer y apoyamos la conveniencia de purgarla de su subjetivismo extremo, conservando lo que de positivo contiene, es decir, su constructivismo. Sugeríamos entonces que quien aceptara, por ejemplo, el idealismo objetivo o el platonismo como filosofía de la matemática no podría aceptar los elementos perturbadores del sistema de Brouwer, pero sí podría reconocer el interés del constructivismo bajo una forma u otra. Y acabamos señalando la posibilidad de compaginar la filosofía platónica de Frege con la practica constructiva de Brouwer. Pues bien, el presente trabajo recoge el inicio de algunas reflexiones en esta dirección. Es conveniente comenzar examinando el platonismo de Frege y señalando algunos de los problemas que éncontramos en el mismo.
