Sobre el atenocentrismo en Suplicantes de Esquilo

Abstract

En la tragedia griega, el atenocentrismo es especialmente explícito en episodios sobre personajes exiliados que precisan de acogida, en los que se alaba la capacidad de Atenas de ofrecer y garantizar asilo. De las cinco tragedias conservadas en las que se dramatiza la recepción de fugitivos, Suplicantes de Esquilo es la única que no se ambienta en Atenas, sino en Argos. En el presente artículo se estudia hasta qué punto se refl eja la Atenas clásica en la Argos trágica, prestando especial atención a aquellos elementos de la obra que denotan los valores democráticos atenienses. Se discute, sin embargo, una completa asimilación de la Argos de la tragedia con la polis ateniense. Aunque al fi nal de la obra se ratifi ca la acogida de las Danaides, de acuerdo con el mito y con el hipotético desarrollo de la trilogía esquílea de la que formaba parte Suplicantes, el asilo de las hijas de Dánao terminará resultando fallido. Esto pone en cuestionamiento la hegemonía y la capacidad de la polis acogedora para garantizar la protección del necesitado, lo que manifi esta la complejidad del elogio a las instituciones en la obra.
