Abstract

The evaluation of teaching performance has real implications on teacher’s activity, salaries, career development and vocational training, by the flourishing research that analyze the performance appraisal systems in various educational contexts. The present descriptive and analytical study, with transversal approach, configured in the form of a case study, has as main objective to analyze the teachers’ perception of Agostinho Neto University concerning the evaluation system of the teaching performance. Participated 30 teachers, aged between 25 and 52 years, who responded to a survey with 23 open and closed questions, concerning the evaluation of teaching performance, and the responses were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. The main results showed that teachers evaluate their profession as "education and training of individuals". Overall, they present a congruent perception of the process of teaching performance assessment with the stipulated in legal, normative Concerning to how this takes place, periodicity, instruments and methodology, actors and evaluation target. It is also observed that the main concerns are that the evaluation did not reflect the quality of teaching/learning and there is no knowledge and/or clarification of the criteria to be assessed, not showing any impact on improving the teaching career, in salaries and training, but at level promotions. A large part of teachers noted that the department does not make the monitoring of lessons and also was not available for questions. As for the opinion concerning the teaching performance assessment form, the results showed that it shows insufficient, outdated, not clarify the objectives, it is subjective, do not contribute to the personal growth of teachers, and only requires formalization. Future investigations should be conducted on the evaluation of the teaching performance with the intention of diagnosing the reality of this country so they can be suggested and implemented improvements which will enhance the evaluation, with visible contribution at the level of teaching career, of schools and of students ' learning.
