A mail art de Ernesto de Sousa

Abstract

This article aims at exploring Ernesto de Sousa’s participation in the inter national Mail Art movement through the decades of 1970 and 1980. By pre senting a summary of the Mail Art movement, highlighting the role Fluxus played in its dissemination, it will then be possible to reflect on the con nections Ernesto de Sousa established with and inside the Mail Art Net work. We aim at understanding how these relationships contributed to and aligned with the research and curatorial activities Ernesto de Sousa devel oped in these same years, diluting in his work the roles of artist, art critic and promoter under the new term “aesthetic operator”. This route leads to a reflection on the potential approach to art history proposed by Ernesto de Sousa’s work and the key principles of Mail Art, as well as its inherent challenges.
