Relação entre Estilos Educativos Parentais, Estilos de Coping e Saúde Mental em Adolescentes

Abstract

Nowadays, the curiosity and interest in the influence of parenting practices on the well-being of adolescents is increasing. Thus, and after reading the corresponding bibliography, we intended to understand if there is a significant relationship between parenting styles and more areas of interest. Therefore, this work aims to assess the existence of relationships between Parental Educational Styles, the use of Coping strategies and styles, and Mental Health. Consequently, we used a sample of 278 subjects between 15 and 18 years old, who participated in the investigation by filling out five instruments: a Sociodemographic Questionnaire (Maia de Carvalho, Vale Dias, & Sieiro, 2019), the Style Scale Parental Education - Version for Children (Barros de Oliveira, 1994), the Portuguese adaptation of the Brief Cope Questionnaire (Maia de Carvalho, Vale-Dias & Carvalho, 2018), the MHC-SF adapted for the Portuguese population by Matos et al. (2010) and the Portuguese adaptation of the BSI (Canavarro, 1995). The results demonstrate that Parental Educational Styles are related to Coping Styles, and each of the variables may have consequences on Mental Health. The implications that this research has for future studies is its replication with a larger, more balanced and diversified sample and the use of the Parental Educational Styles Scale – Version for Parents. It was concluded that there is a significant relationship between the three variables under study, being constantly interconnected with each other.
