Mosaico da Coriscada

Abstract

This report describes the activities carried out in the curricular internship, of the second year of the master’s degree in Cultural Heritage and Museology, in the field of Conservation and Rehabilitation, carried out at the Museu Monográfio de Conímbriga. The work presented here consists of two parts. The first describes the theoretical part that includes the framing of the host institution, the Conímbriga Monographic Museum, respective work areas and a little bit of its history, starting with the occupation of the Conímbriga plateau (Proto-History) until today, as a tourist and archaeological research site. Theories developed over the years about conservation and restoration of cultural heritage and its principles created and put into practice today are also addressed. Finally, the problems associated with degradation and conservation and restoration, in situ and ex situ, of Roman mosaics are also presented, with ex situ conservation being the one that stands out the most, as it was the conservation method put into practice at the stage. The second part of the report presents the case study and practical work carried out, which focused on the completion of the restoration of the Coriscada Mosaic discovered in the Roman villa of Coriscada, in Mêda. Here, the entire process of conservation and restoration is described, from its discovery to the moment it was set up in an exhibition, in Coriscada, in a building that will be the future Interpretative Center of Vale do Mouro.During the finalization process, complementary studies were also carried out on the mosaic, such as the diversity of colors that make up the mosaic, the variation in the density of the tesserae, between the figurative and geometric panels, and in relation to the constitution of the tesserae. The packaging, return and assembly process at Coriscada was also monitored and described.
