Arquitectura militar portuguesa no Golfo Pérsico : Ormuz, Keshm e Larak

Abstract

This thesis is the dissertation to be present to the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Coimbra, in order to obtain the academic degree of Philosophiae Doctor in History, Speciality of Art History. The results of reflexions and the works of architectonical surveys of three monuments are submitted to appreciation: the Fortress of Hormuz and the Forts of Keshm and of Larak, for the first time becoming available the documented records of the actual situation of the ruins. Relating to the Fortress of Hormuz and the Fort of Keshm, we also present proposals of projects for the heritage safeguarding. We take this opportunity to attach materials (some of them news) relative to the Factory of Bandar-e Kong, this way covering the substantial of the production of Portuguese military architecture in Persia, in the 16th and 17th centuries. We discuss the profile of Architect Inofre de Carvalho, comprising in the analysis the great reform made on the fortification of Bahrain. From the theoretical point of view, it deserves a special place the framing of the Portuguese military architecture «of transition» to the bulwarked production. We equated, sometimes with a different scope, the movements that occurred since the last quarter of the 15th century, specially the evolution of the artillery and the pioneer role played by Portugal, as well as the international technical interchange, namely around the changes occurred in the Near East with the activity of the Order of the Knights of St. John in the Rhodes Island.
