Abstract

Positive career development is a field of study that encompasses a diverse range of concepts and many theoretical contributions, assuming a high degree of exchange between fields. In infancy and adolescence, however, few studies exist for this area, especially about themes related to vocational interest and perceived competences, work values and career adaptability, dimensions that contribute in setting children and adolescents in healthy career trajectories. In this sense, the present project propose a study on the context of middle school, with a portuguese sample (7th grade to 9th grade; Portugal’s 3rd cicle of basic education), to validate a work values scale, as well as to understand the relationship between work values and vocational interests, as well as their impact on the career adaptability dimensions. A sociodemographic questionnaire, to collect information regarding relevant sociodemográfic variables, the ICA-R (Inventory of Children’s Activity - Revised), to assess vocational interests, the CAAS (Career Adapt-Ability Scale), to assess career adaptability dimensions, and the work values scale, proposed by Hisrchi, will be proposed for application. Relying on multivariate statistical procedures, the formulated hypotheses will be tested. Unfortunately, with the closing of schools for non academic purposes due to social distancing measures, it was not possible to fulfill the complete study, being only possible to accomplish the exploratory study regarding the dimensionality of the work values scale in Portugal.
