Estilos Educativos Parentais, Utilização das TIC e Saúde Mental em Adolescentes

Abstract

In the modern scientific literature, it is possible to perceive a recent increase of interest and number of studies about new technologies of information and communication, with particular incidence on younger population. It’s a fact that the technological advancements verified in the modern world currently play a major role of influence in all of us, and specially, teenagers. Parallel to this, it matters to understand if factors like family environment are related to the user of ICTs and the domains of mental health. By estimate, this work aims to assess the existence of relationships between Parenting Educational Styles, the use of ICT and Mental Health. So, use a sample of 209 subjects aged between 15 and 18, who recorded five instruments: a Socio-Demographic Questionnaire (Maia de Carvalho, Vale Dias and Sieiro, 2019), the Parenting Educational Styles Scale (Barros de Oliveira, 1994), a Portuguese adaptation of MTUAS-PY (Costa et al., 2016), a Portuguese adaptation of BSI (Canavarro, 1999) and the MHC-SF adapted for the Portuguese population by Matos et al. (2010). The results demonstrate that Parenting Educational Styles are not related to the use of Facebook and that, in turn, the frequency of Facebook use may have consequences on Mental Health. The results demonstrate that Parenting Educational Styles are not related to the use of Facebook and that, in turn, the frequency of using Facebook may have consequences on Mental Health. The implications that this investigation has for future studies is its replication with a larger and more balanced sample and the use of other variables. It was concluded that, there must be a preventive social intervention regarding the use of social networks.
