Abstract

Cognitive models of social anxiety assume that experiencing anxiety in social situations is, in part, due to catastrophizing and overestimation potentially negative outcomes of a social interaction. Two possible mechanisms to explain this relationship may be self-criticism and self-compassion. Therefore, this study aimed to explore, in a Portuguese adolescent sample, if social anxiety could be predicted by catastrophizing and if self-criticism and self-compassion would mediate this relationship. The sample included 779 adolescents from the general population (55.3% girls; Mage = 14.64; SD = 1.51). Self-report questionnaires measuring social anxiety, self-compassion, self-criticism and catastrophizing, were filled up. Results revealed that self-criticism and self-compassion mediated the relationship between catastrophizing and social anxiety, in a crossectional study and a longitudinal study without covariates. However, when previous social anxiety was controlled, the predictive role of catastrophizing and the mediating role of self-criticism and self-compassion ceased to exist, probably related to the substantial contribution of preexisting social anxiety symptomatology. Results suggest that the influence of catastrophizing in social anxiety is, in part, due to the role of self-criticism and self-compassion. The present model implies that self-criticism and self-compassion may be important targets in the assessment and intervention in adolescents with social anxiety. Limitations and clinical implications were discussed.
